English Information and Application Form

How to apply for a study at the fadbk

Artistic talent and a corresponding motivation in applicants are critical for admission
to study. In principle the course of study is suitable for all applicants with university
level graduation, after work presentation and application discussion in which admission is
decided.

University or specialized university level graduation is desirable but not a necessary
condition for admission. University level graduation can be dispensed with if the artistic
quality of the application justifies it and a successful course of study appears possible.

Study can be started in both the winter and the summer semesters. Applications for the
respective semester are to be submitted by the 15th ultimo at the latest. If the applicant
does not meet the conditions, he/she has the possibility of a pre-analysis visit and to prepare
for the study course of the freie Akademie der bildenden Künste, Essen.

The application form must include the following documents:
- a (handwritten) curriculum vitae
- Short statement about your motivation and your personal aims to study art instead of an interview
- copies of examination certificates, including a certified translation of the certificates and other qualifications
- Portfolio with 20 works on paper and / or good reproductions of your work as color-slides or prints
- documentation of sufficient proficiency in the German language (TestDaF, DSH or an equivalent certification)
- proof of health insurance
- a medical certificate of fitness
- 3 passport photos

Applicants who already live in Germany have to introduce their portfolio personally. Please take as well all required documents with you.
Applicants who live abroad may send their portfolio to us. For possibly return please contact us by e-mail to inform you about the postage.
The closing date for application forms is:
15. 08. (für das Wintersemester / for the next wintersemester)
15.02. (für das Sommersemester / for the next summersemester)

According to the German immigration rules you need to proof evidence of the following things:

- evidence of health inscurance contract

- Applicants will be required to produce evidence of their ability to maintain themselves for the period of study, including fees and living expenses. You can do this by means of a so-called ?Finanzierungsnachweis? (proof of funding) for one year, which is to certify that you can finance your stay here without needing social benefits. The average living expenses come to approximately Eur 600-700 per month, plus tuition fees. This amount can vary, of course, depending on your lifestyle.

- The applicants should be 18 years of age, but not older than 30 years

- Visa
Foreign students wishing to enter Germany require visas. The visas must be issued by the German Embassy or the German Consulate in your home country. Applicants and students from EU states, the EFTA states and states with whom Germany has agreed special conditions, are exempt from this regulation. Please contact your nearest German Embassy or Consulate to get detailed information about the German immigration procedure. Please ask whether or not you need a visa and which kind of visa you might need.

The staff of the German Embassy or Consulate will check your financial situation and apply for the approval of the relevant immigration authority in Essen. If the Embassy or Consulate does not find a reason to refuse entrance, the application is approved and the visa can be issued.

There are different types of visa: a language course visa, which cannot be changed into a study visa, a visa for university applicants and a study visa. You need either a visa for university applicants, which is valid for three months provided that you have not yet been admitted to a university or academy. Or you need a study visa, which is valid for one year. The immigration authority in Essen will give residence permit for starting to study at the fadbk when you can proof evidence of the admittance to study at the fadbk and / or have already applied by signing the study contract.
